Do you consider ‘Bossy’ a bad word?
Beyonce does and she’s joining the fight to ban the
word from being used to describe females.
With March being Women’s History Month, Facebook
COO Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In foundation has started up a new initiative to end
the b-word –as in bossy, while revealing that it discourages young women from
being interested in leadership.
In a newly released clip publicizing the movement,
familiar faces like Condoleeza Rice, Diane von Furstenberg, and Jennifer
Gardner ask viewers to ban the word and instead encourage young girls to be
assertive, ambitious, brave and themselves. The PSA ends with Bey declaring:
I’m not bossy! I’m the boss!
Alright now!
The overall message in the PSA states:
By middle school girls are less interested in
leadership than boys and that’s because they worry about being called ‘Bossy!’
We need to tell them it’s okay to be ambitious. We need to help them lean
in. Words matter. Let’s just ban the word bossy and encourage girls to
lead. To be strong and ambitious. Listen to your own voice. There are no
limits. Dare to be you. You can change the world. Let’s ban ‘Bossy!’
