Nigeria names new head of Securities Commission

A new Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC, was on Monday named. He is Mounir Gwarzo, the incumbent Executive Commissioner (Operations) of the Commission, who is expected to perform in acting capacity till a substantive official is appointed. The appointment of Mr. Gwarzo, followed the exit of Arunma Oteh, whose five years tenure at the capital market regulatory agency lapsed on Sunday. The outgoing Director General, who named Mr. Gwarzo at the formal handover ceremony at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, described her time at the helm of the Commission as “absolutely outstanding”.Ms. Oteh’s spoke about the co-operation she received from every member of staff, saying when she joined SEC in January 2010, she was not only certain about its importance, butalso what its role and agenda which was to have a vision “building a world class market” capital market operators, shareholders and other stakeholders were able to connect and align with, she said. She said her time was very rewarding. What SEC was able to achieve, Ms. Oteh explained, was a foundation for the country tosee a capital market that would help tackle itsinfrastructure challenges to help new and existing businesses raise capital.“Our aim is to build a meritocracy for viable businesses to get funded, not necessarily the ones that have connections, so that we can also tackle some of what we are seeing in ourworld today, whether security challenges the country face or everyone else,” Ms. Oteh said.Ms. Oteh joined SEC at a time the Nigerian capital market was grappling with global financial market crisis. She was acknowledged to have contributed significantly to the effort to rescue the capital market from the losses as a result of the global financial crisis. From a market capitalization of N4.99 trillion in January 2010 when she took over, various reform measures raised Nigerian Stock Exchange, NSE capitalization to over N14 trillion in 2014.Consequently, the market rating, which rose by 35 per cent in 2012 to about 47 per cent in 2013, was amongst the ten best performing markets in the world that same year.Mr. Gwarzo, 50, was born in Kano and attended the Bayero University, Kano, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics in 1987.In 1991, he attended University of Birmingham, United Kingdom where he obtained a post-graduate degree in Development Finance. Oil Crisis: Buhari demands immediate reduction in fuel prices

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari, has called on the Nigerian government to implement immediate price reduction on fuel products to reflect the downscaling in global oil prices.Speaking through his campaign organization, the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, on Monday, Mr. Buhari asked the government to “stop stealing from Nigerians and allow them enjoy the relief that has come to consumers of petroleum products globally”.A statement from the Directorate of Media and Publicity of the APC presidential campaign said it was disturbing that in spite of the fall in the global price of crude oil, Nigerians still buy petroleum products at pump prices as if the global price of crude oil had remained at $100 (USD) per barrel. The statement said: “The current attempt by the government to deregulate the prices of some petroleum products has been completely compromised to satisfy few money bags to the detriment of the Nigerian people and the economy.“The price of diesel which has been deregulated since 2009 still sells at the pump price of N150 and N170 per litre, the same pump price when the international benchmarkper barrel of crude was over $100. Now that the international benchmark has dropped to$47.5 (USD) per barrel as at Monday, we ask: where is the deregulation and the relief which it ought to bring to local consumers of diesel? “For the Nigerian consumers, unfortunately the collapse of crude oil price since October 2014 has not translated into any change in diesel, kerosene and PMS prices across the country.“We challenge the federal government to reconcile the information on the website of the Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency, indicating the maximum open market price of diesel per litre in December 2014 as being at N111.6 and the fact that the price has come down to less than $50 (USD) as at Monday.“We want to posit that that the maximum indicative benchmark open consumers of diesel should pay is at a margin below N100 per litre. Therefore, Nigerians are being short-changed by about N50 to N70 on every litre ofdiesel sold by government.“The implication of this is that with average consumption of about 12 to 15 million litres, Nigerians are currently extorted of amounts between N600 Million to N1 Billion daily due to corruption-induced poor regulatory oversight of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources. No wonder some few industry players are smiling to the banks and buying private jets while small scale industrialists who buy diesel on daily basis for power generation and transportation find it difficult to break-even with their businesses.“Similarly on Kerosene, information available on the website of the PPPRA puts the Open Market Price at N114.71 per litre although the market price is anything above N150 per litre when the global price for a barrel of crude oil was $65 (USD). Now that international price of crude is at $47.5 (USD) per barrel, why are Nigerians still buying kerosene per litre at the same price? Why are Nigerians not benefitting from the global shortfall in the prices of crude by having a cut in the pump prices of petroleum products?“We are aware that there are examples in other African countries where governments have cut the pump prices of petroleum products to reflect the changes in the global oil market. Countries like South Africa, Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya have announced cuts in pump prices of petroleum products, why can’t the Nigerian government do same?“Given the failure of government to do the right thing by announcing a cut in the pump prices of these products, we are compelled to draw the conclusion that the federal government is short-changing Nigerians ostensibly to fund the campaign of the PDP presidential candidate.“The APC Presidential Campaign challenges the federal government to make explanations on why Nigerians cannot benefit pricing reliefs on petroleum products as occasioned by the fall in the global price of crude oil. Anything should of this is a fraud and Nigerians should take note.“As for PMS (petrol) the only product the government agrees as regulated at N97 per litre, the irony is that it does not even cost much as in the United States, a country that was importing oil from Nigeria until recently.“Moreover, even the current budget is still heavy on subsidy with an allocation of N458.68 billion, a scheme that has become a conduit pipe over the years for which the children of ruling party leaders have been beneficiaries.”

Buhari hates Yoruba people with passion, he must apologise to us – Adeyeye

Minister of State for Works, Prince Adedayo Adeyeye has insisted that the presidential flag bearer of All Progressives Congress, APC, Major General Muhammadu Buhari must apologize to the Yoruba ethnic group over what he tagged as his unrepentant ‘hatred’ for the people. According to Adeyeye, before the people of Southwest could vote for Buhari, he must tender an unreserved public apology to the people of the zone. In a statement, which was personally signed by him and made available to the newsmen in Ado Ekiti yesterday, Adeyeye, who reviewed all the programmes and policies of the APC presidential candidate while he was the Head of State and also the chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund, PTF, said Buhari was number one enemy of the Yoruba. Adeyeye said, “Buhari did not only cancel the Metro line project, he went ahead to pay what was enough to complete the project as compensation to the French company that handled the project.“The idea of developing rapid transit in Lagos dated from the 1980s with the Lagos metro line network conceived by the Alhaji Lateef Jakande during the Second Republic.“The Metro line project was scrapped in 1985 by Buhari at a loss of over $78m to the Lagos tax payers. Information on the Metro line Project is on Wikipedia for everyone to see.“If Buhari had not cancelled that project out of hatred for the Yoruba people, transportation in Lagos would have been better than it is now and one can begin to imagine the number of lives and investments that had been lost to Buhari’s wickedness.

“Everything that Awolowo did for us in Yoruba land, Buhari undone. Buhari was even planning to merge the University of Ibadan with Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife when he was removed”.However, the Publicity Secretary of the APC in Ekiti, Taiwo Olatunbosun, said Buhari was not an enemy of the Yoruba and asked Adeyeye to list the benefits he had brought to Ekiti since his appointment as a minister. Olatunbosun said, “Buhari has contributed more to the development of the nation. Most of the federal roads in Ekiti, including Ondo, were duly tarred with high grade materials by the Petroleum Trust Fund under Buhari as the chairman.“To show our respect for Awolowo, our vice Presidential candidate, Prof. Yemi Osibajo, is a grand son in-law to the late sage.“Adeyeye should tell us which of the federal projects we are enjoying from Jonathan. Even he (Adeyeye) as the minister of works, many federal roads were awarded without Ekiti getting any.

“He should tell us what Ekiti would benefit from him as the Minister of State for Works and not tell us who to vote for because he is not qualified to speak on behalf of Ekiti people.”

First Ladies Don’t Spend Government Money – Jonathan - Politics - Nairaland

President Goodluck Jonathan has said that occupants of the offices of the first lady across the nation “are not spending government money,” even though the platform has become veritable means of mobilising women for national development. The President’s position was a response to the complaints on social media that the offices constitute unnecessary burden to government, as they have become avenues through which public resources are frittered away. The President, in an argument tweeted by hisSpecial Assistant on New Media, Reno Omokri, said, “I can tell you that these offices(of first ladies) are helping to mobilise the women.”He boasted that his administration had made remarkable achievements in women empowerment, with several women getting key political appointments.“Nigerian women, I don’t believe that you are designed by God to pound yam for me, to be a baby factory,” he said. The President also did self-evaluation on keyareas of governance on Monday as the campaign trains of the two leading presidential contenders moved around the country.Among the areas he mentioned was education. If re-elected, he said, he would notbuild prisons for Nigerians but more schools.Apparently referring to the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Major-General Mohammadu Buhari, he said many office seekers had started promising what they had opportunity to do but never did in the past.“I believe in you, I love you. We will work hardto improve the quality of our lives. A lot of people are coming to deceive you that they will do things they had opportunity to do that they never did. This government has built more tertiary institutions than any other government. We’ve built 14 universities.“We are creating future leaders. We don’t believe that you must be of a very high age to lead,” Jonathan, who is seeking a second term, said.He promised to use technology to deal with graft, a national disgrace his administration has been severely accused of, saying several people have used corruption to enrich themselves. In a response to the Baga attack where scores were killed, the President said he had ordered the National Security Adviser to givea “comprehensive report to Nigerians.”He continued, “We are encouraging young graduates to go into farming and be the future millionaires and billionaires.”Jonathan was also quoted by Omokri as saying that the Peoples Democratic Party was the highest shareholder in APC – a party he also described as “a subsidiary of PDP.” He based his judgment on the number of ex-PDP members “in charge” of the opposition party.Meanwhile, the Buhari social media teams on Monday also gave minute-by-minute account of the APC’s activities in Imo and other parts of the country. The retired general told Nigerians, “Get your Permanent Voters Cards. Make sure you vote; make sure you defend your vote. Make sure that your voice is heard.”The Buhari Presidential Campaign coordinator and Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, said Jonathan should not expect votes from Imo indigenes because hedid not do anything for them. He challenged the President to tell the Igbos what he had done for them. Also on twitter, the APC Chairman, John Oyegun, wondered why the people should not be tired of the lies they had endured in the past 16 years. If nothing else, he said, they should be “tired of epileptic electricity.”A former minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasir el-Rufai, lambasted the Jonathan administration for the Baga attack. He said it was shameful the government could not discuss its occurrence even though it debated the number of casualties.Amid the intense political horse trading, news of confirmation by the United States Army College that Buhari, indeed, graduated from the school went viral on social media. The confirmation letter that was purportedly issued by Carrol Kerr of the Public Affairs Office of the institution said Buhari graduated with a diploma in 1980.

2015: Buhari Will Be Humiliated – South East PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has described APC’s cap in hand scouting for South East votes as will-o’-the-wisp, sheer delusion and a mid-day feverish dream, asking the party to forget the zone as South-Easterners will deliver 100 percent block vote to the PDP in February general elections.PDP National Vice Chairman, South East, Austin Akobundu, in a statement on Saturday said “the South East apart from being an impregnable forte of the PDP, the APC’s ideology of lies, deceit,
divisiveness and violence is a vexatious stigma that makes support for it a cardinal sin among the peace loving people of the zone”.
“One thing is sure: There is no place for the APC in the South East, so they should not hope to get any vote from the zone. The bitter truth for the party is that the five states of the South East are
solidly in support of the PDP and will deliver a block vote for President Jonathan and all our candidates in the February elections. We therefore wish to advise the APC, its Presidential candidate as well as other candidates not to waste energy in the zone,” the party said.
Stating that “there is no way the South East will choose the APC, which represents anarchy and violence in place of the PDP, which has brought stability and development to the country in the last 15 years”, the ruling party said APC Presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, will be humiliated in the elections as he has nothing positive to offer the electorates in the zone in particular and the nation in general.

“When Buhari was military head of state, he did not remember the South East for any concrete project. The only legacy his draconian rule left for Ndigbo was the unjust hounding and jailing of credible South East leaders such as former Vice President Alex Ekwueme and former Governor
of the old Anambra state, Senator Jim Nwobodo through a heartless Kangaroo trial that threw justice to the dogs. The extra judicial killing of innocent citizens is scar that even hyssop can’t wash,” the PDP said.
Arguing that ‘Igbo adighi ahapu ebe a na-echi ozo, gaba ebe a na-aru agwu’, meaning; “no one leaves a princely gathering with prospects of wellbeing, for the house of exorcisms with accompanying gnashing of teeth,” the statement said the South East is solidly PDP.
It therefore advised the APC not to be deceived by the Imo state Governor , Rochas Okorocha and other axial politicians to believe that it has structures in the zone, describing them as a lone voice in a distant ‘ ajo ofia ‘ the evil forest.
“For the APC, a party that holds no promise for the South East either in its unofficial defacto conclave or in its de-jure leadership structure or even in its tentative basketing of offices if the miracle of winning power at the centre ever happens, the people will ill afford a train that leads to nowhere.
The PDP added that it remained the pre-eminent party in Imo State with formidable structures and very popular candidates saying that the citizens are eager to vote out the Governor and end the misrule of the state by APC.

Husband files N500m suit against Lagos based Indian doctor

A female Indian doctor, Bharathi Jayaram practicing at the Prema Sai Hospital, a private hospital located in Agege, Lagos state has been arrested and charged to court for the death of a pregnant patient.
She was sued by one Mr. Semako Hunpe, over claims of unprofessional misconduct that led to the death of his wife, Mrs Oluwasetemi Hunpe and scarring of their new born baby during his wife’s delivery at the Indian doctor’s hospital on February 26 this year.
In a N500 million lawsuit filed by his counsel, Barrister Kayode Adaramoye, Mr Semako Hunpe alleged that professional misconduct led to the death of Mrs. Oluwasetemi Hunpe, his wife.
In an interview with Tribune, Semako claimed his wife Oluwasetemi had registered at the hospital on February 17, 2014 for antenatal services only to start experiencing some pre-delivery signs. He said she was given some injections and told to wait till about 5pm on February 26th before she would be taken in to the delivery room.
“When she went into labour, she was ordered to engage in minor exercises to help aid the labour. Before she entered into the labour room I can remember clearly that she was normal like all pregnant women that I had seen; she walked into the labour room by herself. I was invited into the labour room after several hours of intense labour without adequate care and was asked to encourage my wife to push out as she appeared exhausted sequel to prolong hours of labour.
On getting to the labour room, I found a nurse applying Aboniki (hot balm), pressing the deceased abdomen while asking her to push and after this amateur mechanism did not yield desired result, they cut the deceased three times to bring out the baby and placed it somewhere unattended to.  First of all, I noticed that the baby was left unattached for a long time while all four nurses were attending to my wife.
During the period of the delivery, I did not at anytime see the doctor; it was after the delivery that one of the nurses went to call the doctor. The doctor came in at about 6.15 p.m and told me to leave the labour room. I left the labour room and stood outside the door. As I stood there, I heard a noise as if someone was being flogged inside. This noise continued repeatedly. My fear grew as the nurses began to rush up and down, fidgeting. It was at this point I tried to get one of the nurses to talk to me but she wouldn’t. Twenty-five minutes after delivery, I was told by one of the nurses that the baby was all right, I went inside to see my wife only to see her being massaged all over her body with Aboniki balm.
It terrified me to see the frequency with which they were shouting my wife’s name. She used her last bit of energy to say that her legs were hurting.  Thirty-five minutes later, I was told that my wife would need blood because she was still bleeding profusely. I immediately agreed to this. All this while, I had not seen the baby.  I heard the doctor calling someone and asking for blood. Shortly after this stinging and ugly news I was informed that my wife was dead. Subsequently, they called one pastor to pray for the resurrection of my wife which further exposed the incompetence, negligence and ineptitude of the hospital’s system. Due to the unprofessional cuttings by incompetent nurses on my wife, the baby suffered serious deep cuts on its back and buttocks. This cuts on different sides of the baby’s body further attest to the mutilation done on his wife,” he said.
Semako Hunpe says 9 months after he was born, the baby still has the scars he got while they were trying to forcefully help his wife give birth.
The hospital has however denied claims of negligence. In a letter titled ““Demand for N500 million Damages,” and written by the hospital’s counsel, John Adanike, the hospital claims the doctor carried out her duties in the best professional manner throughout the time Mr Semako’s wife stayed in their hospital.
Dr Bharathi Jayaram has practiced here in Nigeria in the last 20 years.

Why Would Anyone in their right minds wish to see GEJ re-elected – Buhari

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) has declared that no normal Nigerian would wish to have president Goodluck Jonathan as the nation’s leader for the next four years.
According to Buhari, re-electing Jonathan in 2015 is tantamount to having the problems and issues affecting the nation, persist.
The erstwhile Head of State, posted a message on his Facebook page on Sunday, 21 December, saying that the present administration, having spent four years, has recorded little progress.
He said: “Those who are afraid of the change we seek are the people destroying our country and stunting its progress. They are the same people who spent four years in power without improving our electricity by a single megawatt, the same people who spent four years downgrading high-level corruption to common stealing, the same people who spent four years watching over terrorists desecrating our territorial sovereignty, the same people who spent four years without laying the critical infrastructure for sustainable growth and job creation; those same people are now asking you for four more years.”
“No right thinking Nigerian would wish that our next four years look like the last four. Change has to come, and it begins with you getting registered and spreading our message of change and hope, from sibling to sibling, family to family, neighbourhood to neighbourhood; in our schools, in our market places, in every community, and in every gathering,” Buhari added.

What I Know About Boko Haram – Former governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff Open Up

Senator-Ali-Modu-Sheriff-omogist

Former governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has opened up on what he knows about the Boko Haram insurgents currently ravaging states in the northeast and some other parts of the country, while disclosing that only the neighbouring Republic of Chad could help solve the menace.

Sheriff, while speaking in a BBC Hausa Service magazine programme (Gane Mini Hanya) yesterday, and monitored by LEADERSHIP Sunday in Abuja, denied reports saying that Boko Haram started during his tenure as governor of Borno State between 2003 and 2011. He revealed that the radical religious sect actually started in Yobe State in 1992, and that he has been trying to find a lasting solution to it, including talking to the Chadian government.
But it would be recalled that when the #BringBackOurGirls campaigners visited the Chadian embassy in Abuja recently to find out the connection between Chad and the Boko Haram insurgents, the ambassador had said that his government had no connection to the sect.
The ambassador also alleged that if there was any person that should be held responsible for this problem, it should be the Nigerian government which had repeatedly claimed to know where the Chibok girls are being kept.
When the ambassador was queried on the alleged report of the botched ceasefire deal, which was celebrated across the country and handled by the Chadian President, Idriss Déby, and the report that Mr Mahamat Bichara Gnoti, a close associate of the Chadian president, was reported to have been apprehended on the Chadian-Sudan border with 19 SAM2 missiles he allegedly purchased from the Sudanese army for Boko Haram terrorists, the ambassador noted that he only read about the news on the pages of newspapers just like other persons.
But the former governor, who is also at the centre of a controversy surrounding the sponsorship of the Boko Haram insurgency, following claims by an Australian negotiator, Steven Davis, that he and a former chief of army staff, General Azubuike Ihejirika, were allegedly backing the insurgents, said Chad could help in solving the issue.
Although, the former governor along with Iherijika were exonerated of any complicity during the week by the Department of State Security (DSS), but reacting to his exoneration by the DSS, which paraded people it called fake Boko Haram ceasefire negotiators that confessed to implicating him and Ihejirika after inducement, Sheriff said it is the truth that has come to prevail over falsehood and that he has been vindicated by the latest revelations from the arrested impostors, who allegedly connived with the negotiator, Davis.
He alleged that the Borno State government was responsible for the orchestrated plot to frame him up with the Boko Haram sponsorship allegation in order to defame his character.
Keeping mute on how Chad could possibly help in solving the problem, Sheriff added that since he is one of the few politicians that has benefitted greatly from the kindness of Borno State, as such he is doing whatever it is to help solve the insurgency.
“Nothing preoccupies my mind in Nigeria presently like the return of peace in Borno. When Borno State was peaceful, there was no place I cherished to stay in the world like Maiduguri. I, my friends, my confidants, my parents and all the schools I attended are in Maiduguri.
“Therefore, I am more concerned than anybody in this country, because what Borno State did for me has not been done to any other indigene. You know, in Borno State, a governor has never been re-elected apart from me; in Borno State, no senator has ever been elected thrice apart from me. So, Borno people have done everything for me, and there is no one in this world that I know other than Chad, which I think could help Borno,” he said.
On his belief that he was being framed, Sheriff said: “They defamed my character, and when they started it, I once told journalists that it was plotted in Maiduguri. We know the plotters, their motives, and that by the grace of God, the truth will prevail; and now, the arrested impostors have said it all to the world.”
The former governor alleged that the current Borno State government’s connection with plot to defame him became glaring when the government quickly came out to disown one of the impostors, Junaid Idrissa Khadi, who was until four months ago a special adviser to Governor Kashim Shettima, but rather said Khadi remained his (Sherrif) known associate because he had earlier served his government before Shettima engaged him allegedly under pressure from him.
“This is nonsense. If I had forced him (Khadi) on them, then why will he connive with a Whiteman to implicate me, that I am a Boko Haram member? If at all I helped him to be engaged, then he won’t implicate me…and I have instructed my lawyers to file charges,” he said.
It could also be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan had on two occasions visited the Chadian President Idriss Derby, in September and November this year, towards finding a lasting solution to the insurgency problem.
Jonathan however came under attacks from individuals and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) after it was discovered that Sheriff was part of the high-level meeting between him and his Chadian counterpart in September. Their anger was predicated on the fact that the former governor was at that time accused by Davis of allegedly sponsoring Boko Haram.
Sheriff, who lauded the federal government’s counter-insurgency effort in the interview, however, denied the insinuations that the Boko Haram started during his tenure as governor.
“This is not true. The Boko Haram issue did not start during my tenure. If you don’t know, let me educate you today. Boko Haram started in 1992 at Kalama in Yobe State, and at that time, I was not a governor. So, if anybody tells you it started during my tenure, he may be part of my traducers. But the truth is that it didn’t start during my tenure,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Borno State government, through Governor Shettima’s spokesman, Isa Gusau, has denied any government-sponsored plot to tarnish the image of the former governor, saying the government in Maiduguri was only concerned with the weighty allegations against Sheriff as an indigene of the state.
He also added that the incumbent state governor has nothing to gain from Sheriff’s predicament.
Gusau, in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service yesterday, said: “Governor Kashim Shettima has nothing to gain from the allegation against Ali Sheriff. In fact, to him, it is even shameful that a Borno State indigene, whom the governor has interacted or is connected with, is linked to what is happening. So, Governor Shettima’s connection with this saga is unnecessary.”

Troops kill scores of insurgents in Maiduguri
Scores of terrorists have met their final waterloo after falling into an ambush laid for them by Nigerians troops between Maiduguri and Damboa, Borno State on Friday.
Security sources close to the ongoing mopping operation will determine the number of the terrorists who died in the encounter.
The clash followed the troops’ move to stop the terrorists who were in the process of attacking the electricity engineers who were working to restore power to parts of Borno State.
A large number of the terrorists died in the process while their improvised explosive devise (IED) laden Hilux truck vehicle was destroyed.
When contacted, Defence Spokesman, Major General Chris Olukolade, confirmed the incidents but insisted that the exact casualty figures were still being ascertained.
During the encounter, the troops also captured a Hilux vehicle earlier stolen by the terrorists from the Borno State Ministry of Education, which they have repainted and mounted with an ant-aircraft gun.
Other weapons recovered by troops include rocket propelled grenades and rifles. Unfortunately however, two soldiers died in the encounter.
In a similar development, Military Engineer troops who have been clearing terrorists IEDs and effecting repairs on bridges repelled an attack while working on a bridge around Husara.
Several terrorists also died in the encounter. A total four General Purpose Machine Guns, three rifles and two Rocket Propelled Grenade Launchers were captured from the terrorists during the encounter. One soldier however died while three others were wounded in the encounter.
Meanwhile in Adamawa State, troops continue with the conduct of land patrol of towns of Mubi, Uba, Garkida, Muva and others towns and villages as their advance through coordinated air and land operations in furtherance of counterterrorism campaign.

AMAZING PICTURES – Believe It Or Not, These Photos Were Taken In Oyo State Nigeria As GOVERNOR Ajimobi Re-opens Agodi Gardens, Ibadan

Agodi Gardens-omogist

GOVERNOR Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State on Sunday, performed the re-opening of the reconstructed Agodi Gardens, saying that it had the potential to generate not lesser than N500 million to the state government annually.
The Gardens, now re-christened  “Agodi Resort and Conferences’’ is sitting on 62 hectares of land in-between the state Government Secretariat and the popular Premier Hotel in the heart of Ibadan.
Recommissioned by Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State in October 2013, the revamped Agodi Gardens boasts of water parks, slides, swimming pools, a restaurant, events hall, open areas for picnics, a nine-hole golf course,  a health firm, among other facilities.
According to the Governor: “My administration has invested a lot in tourism to increase Internally Generated Revenue and boost the economy,’’ he said.
The reconstruction is projected to generate income for Oyo state to the tune of N500 million annually.
Agodi2
Governor Ajimobi, while speaking at the ceremony attended by eminent personalities, members of the State Executive Council, students and parents, described the project as a dream come true.
The lighting of Christmas Tree in the gardens was also performed on the occasion by a legal luminary, Chief (Mrs.) Folake Solanke, SAN.
Ajimobi said that his administration was motivated to embark on the reconstruction of the Gardens, in view of its long years of neglect by successive administrations which had left the hitherto popular zoological gardens in a sorry state.
“Agodi Gardens was in a sorry state when we first visited the place. It was desolate and empty. Everything was very bad. It had deteriorated so much and it was very shameful to us in Oyo State,’’ he said.

Drama in Ekiti as 19 APC lawmakers form new Assembly

The 19 lawmakers of the All Progressives Congress members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly have formed a parallel assembly at a remote location.
The APC lawmakers also suspended factional Speaker Dele Olugbemi and the six Peoples Democratic Party lawmakers, who sat to impeach de facto Speaker, Adewale Omirin.
The suspended lawmakers: Abeni Olayinka , Adeyinka Adeloye, Alexander Adeojo, Olowo Ajiboye, Dele Ajibola and Ayo Olajide-Fatunbi of the Peoples Democratic party, were accused of violating Section 96 (1) of the 1999 Constitution.
Olugbemi and the six lawmakers had sat to illegally “impeach” the state House of Assembly Speaker, Dr. Adewale Omirin, and his deputy, Taiwo Orisalade, on November 20.
During the plenary session held at a secret location in Ado-Ekiti and presided over by Omirin, the APC lawmakers also nullified all legislative actions purportedly carried out by the Olugbemi-led Assembly.
The plenary also concluded that the purported impeachment of Omirin and the election of Olugbemi as House Speaker portrayed the Assembly in bad light, hence the need to suspend the seven lawmakers to save the integrity of the legislative chamber.
The Majority Leader, Churchill Adedipe, who moved the motion, alleged that the seven lawmakers gave false information to the public by accusing the 19 APC legislators of receiving bribes to impeach Governor Ayodele Fayose.
The motion to suspend the seven PDP lawmakers was seconded by Omowumi Ogunlola.
The 19 APC lawmakers at their plenary voted in favour of autonomy for local government and the House of Assembly and also granted approval to Section 8 of the Constitution which confers citizenship rights and privileges on Nigerians anywhere they are living in the country, as well as approving autonomy for the offices of Accountant-General and Auditor General of the state as part of constitution amendment.
Adedipe also moved the motion to reconvene the plenary at a public location outside the House of Assembly chambers for security reasons, stating that the action was supported by Section 101 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The plenary resolved to hold its sittings and conduct its legislative business at the Faculty of Science, Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti. Adedipe moved a motion referring the seven lawmakers to the Ethics and Privileges Committee for further disciplinary actions. The motion was seconded by Mrs. Bunmi Oriniowo (Ido/Osi 1).
The lawmakers also passed a vote of confidence in Omirin and the leadership of the House.

NDLEA Destroys N15.1bn Hemp, Arrests Cartel Kingpin [photo]

A coordinated sting operation by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has led to the discovery and destruction of Indian hemp with a street value of N15.1bn. Saturday Punch learnt that the operation was carried out across four states-Ekiti, Edo, Delta and Kogi – where cannabis plantations were also destroyed.

Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, put the total weight of the cannabis intercepted during the raid code-named ‘Operation Weed Eater’ as 1,514,278 kg.

One of the targets of the raid was Uche Obi, the operational head of a cannabis syndicate known as Akunnubas, Saturday Punch learnt.

Obi, who was also known as the ‘King Maker’ was arrested along with seven other members of the syndicate and two truck drivers.

Speaking on the raid, Head of NDLEA’s Public Affairs, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, said “Cannabis plantations were raided and destroyed at Ise Forest Reserve in Ise/Orun Local Government Area of Ekiti State and Ode Camp in Gboyin Local Government Area of the same state.

“Another plantation was also destroyed at Utese Forest Reserve in Edo State. One hundred officers drawn from various State Commands participated in the operation that lasted for twelve days.”

Ofoyeju said during investigation, Obi revealed that he was referred to as the King Maker because of his overriding influence in determining appointment of other executive members of the cartel.

He said he was also responsible for the execution of punishment on erring members and foes. The cartel was said to control much of the cannabis business in the South West and South South of Nigeria.

“Our investigation revealed that the Akunnubas are responsible for over eighty per cent of cannabis production in Nigeria. The syndicate hires cheap labour including school age children to work in cannabis farms. They use motorcycles in conveying processed cannabis from the farms to a temporary covert warehouse from where trucks are later used in taking the drug for inter-State distribution,” Ofoyeju told Saturday Punch.

NDLEA’s Director of Operations and General Investigations, Mr. Olugbenga Mabo, who coordinated operations, said in Ekiti State alone, cannabis weighing 1.5 million kg was destroyed in two cannabis plantations. In Edo, 9,300kg was intercepted and destroyed while 19,675kg was intercepted in a truck in Delta State.

Mabo said, “Two trucks containing 2,103kg of cannabis were seized in Lokoja, Kogi State. The cases are under investigation.

“The interception of a truck carrying a forty-foot container loaded with 19,675kg along the Amai Road, Obiaruku, Delta State by our officers at the Delta State Command and two trucks containing 2,103kg of cannabis by the Kogi State Command is impressive.

Chairman of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, said the arrest of Obi was a reward for painstaking investigation.

“He was under investigation by the agency for several months. This is an era of protracted and diligent investigation that will expose illicit drug activities. I am delighted with the success of the painstaking surveillance carried out by officers in ‘Operation Weed Eater’,” Giade stated.
